As it is difficult to get a high level number 9, would it be that detrimental to place a number 8 or 10 in that position, a 75 star number 10 surely would play better than my 62 star number 9?

It currently does not matter what designated position the player is labelled as long as you apply the training points correctly. You could , therefore theoratically use a front row as a 9 and allocate the points accordingly.
