you cannot. When someone else overbids you, you can spend these coins to some other player.

But if you are the highest bidder, you can lower the maximum value you put in the auction.

How is this done? I thought when you bid and were the highest bidder you can't canc l or lower your bid. I am sure I'm not the only one who has messed up a bid I wished to reduce.

You cannot 'cancel' your bid; but if you bid 1000 coins and 501 is the offered required to be the highest bidder, you can change your bid to 501 (rather than 1000).
