If I play a training match, as the challenger, and lose I don't lose fans but if I am challenged and lose I do lose fans. Is this correct? If so seems very unfair!

Sounds like either it is a glitch or it's a perk for challenging teams.
No it's just a stupid "feature" which should be fixed.
