Why is it that when I bid on a player that's only got a few seconds left on the auction and the time goes back up to over 4mins?

Once your bid is the highest; there is an additional five minutes for someone else to outbid you. If someone then outbids you, you and everyone else then has five minutes to outbid them. This pattern continues until there is a winning bid.
